Bu cümleler soru yapılırsa “be”i özneden önce kullanılır.

Is there a table in this room? (Bu odada bir masa var mı?)

Are there two tables in this room? (Bu odada iki masa var mı?)

Is there an officer in this office? (Bu büroda bir memur var mı?)

Are there ten workers in this factory? (Bu fabrikada on işçi var mı?)


Bu yapıda “be”nin tekil (is) ya da çoğul (are) olarak yazılması “be”den sonra gelen kelimenin "tekil" ya da "çoğul" olmasına göre şekillenir.


Örnek:

There is a table and four chairs in this room.

There are four chairs and a table in this room.

Görüldüğü gibi “a table” tekil olduğu için birinci cümlede “is”, “four chairs” çoğul olduğu için ikinci cümlede “are” kullanıldı.

There is - there are yapısında “be” de zamana göre “be - am - is - are - was - were - been” şekillerinden birine girer.

There was a table in this room an hour ago. (Simple Past)

There has been a woman at the door for three hours. (Present Perfect)

There had been a good film on TV before I left. (Past Perfect)
